How to Meditate: Just Breathe

July 29, 2016 Melanie Glover

When I tell my colleagues (who also strive to manage their personal and professional stress) that meditation and mindfulness saved me, they oftentimes give me puzzled looks.  The questions that follow include these:  how do you meditate?  Meditation -- what's that?

I admit that I, too, once felt perplexed by the subject.  I had heard the terms "mindfulness" and "meditation" used in the occasional yoga class that I had attended in the past, but I did not have a firm understanding of what the two terms meant.

I was curious, and so I attended a mindfulness-based stress reduction course.  My explanations for the terms are probably quite personal by now as my experiences with them have helped me define them.  Considering this general disclaimer, this is how I would define both:

Meditation:  Breathing into, through, and with the present moment.

Mindfulness:  Being aware of the present moment.

These basic, personal definitions are the ones that I share with my inquisitive colleagues, but their questions never end there.  The conversation always develops into storytelling, which leads to connection.  Their questions and experiences have led me to write about meditation and mindfulness so that perhaps by understanding it, they might practice it for themselves.

My definitions are simple because the practices are simple, and I want people to know this:  you do not have to be good at meditation or practicing mindfulness.  Meditation involves watching the mind.  It means nothing more than breathing in and out, and focusing on the breath to remain in the present moment.  The result is minimizing future distractions or preoccupations as well as past fears or anxieties.  Mindfulness means practicing awareness of the action or inaction of the moment at hand.  For example, mindfulness means paying attention to the outline of the pine trees that you pass alongside the road as you drive to work.  It means acknowledging the beautiful interwoven colors of a summer sunset.  Or it could mean focusing on the squeezing of the bicep muscle during the contraction phase of a curl.  For me, meditation is breathing, and mindfulness is awareness and acceptance.

Mindfulness and meditation help me slow down, become aware of my tendency to react, and reassess what is in fact a proper response to whatever circumstances face me in a moment.  Simply being aware that a certain situation is causing you anxiety helps stop the racing thoughts and urges you to reexamine what the best response might be.  Usually, it is not the one you would have chosen had you not allowed mindfulness to interrupt your ingrained thought patterns.  A better response could await you.  If you simply pay attention and notice what your first thought was, a second, different thought might replace it if you practice this interruption of cascading, anxious thoughts to keep them from becoming a torrent of negativity.

So how can you practice mindfulness and meditation?  I recommend starting with five deep breaths:  inhale and exhale five times slowly.  Notice the rise of your chest on each in breath and the fall of your chest on each out breath.  Or, become curious about the cool air passing through your nostrils on the in breath and the puff of air that escapes them on the out breath.

Be curious.  Pay attention.  Notice your feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, and accept them just as they are.  Breathe through these feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, and repeat this process for as long as you desire.  Even five deep breaths can re-center you and set you up to experience a calmer next moment to increase mental and emotional clarity for any situation.

Stepping Out (of Your Comfort Zone)

July 22, 2016 Melanie Glover

Every time I have pushed myself outside of my comfort zone, it has hurt.  But I have not once regretted it.

It was the beginning of my legal career, and I had to cover a hearing for my supervisor.  The hearing was supposed to be simple and straightforward.  It was not supposed to take long.  However, everything turned out how I least expected.

The hearing that was supposed to last five minutes lasted five hours as I waited for other attorneys to take their turns with their clients before the Judge.  I came back a second and then a third time; I went back and forth with the Judge on the record; and I interacted with my client.  I was not prepared for that marathon day in Court when what I had been expecting was a five-minute hearing.  At the end of the day, I just wanted to hide:  despite my all-afternoon efforts, we would have to appeal.

I confess:  I felt like I had let my client and myself down.

Then, after several months, I took a step back and reflected.  I learned practical things, such as (1) always to take my Statute with me to Court, and (2) to always be prepared for a hearing to last all day.

But I also learned a deeper lesson to apply to life in general both in my professional and personal lives.  I learned that undesirable situations might just bring a person to the edge of discomfort only to come out on the other side with a fresh perspective, a new relationship, or some other productive and creative energy or opportunity.

That day I felt less than my best self in front of my colleagues, the Judge, and my client.  But after further examining the experience, I realize that I also made a valuable friendship with another attorney who went through the same experience by my side.  And out of that friendship, I have been able to commiserate, receive advice, and even give advice.  In summary, I have learned that even what seem to be the most challenging situations at the time can still produce hope; you just have to look – and practice looking – for it.

When we reflect, we learn.  And when we fall, we do not have to stay defeated.  We can stand back up, and we can learn from the tumble.  Coming to a positive conclusion after enduring hard circumstances is not comfortable.  In fact, it can be a bit reckless; but it is unexpectedly worthwhile.

My overarching advice for young professionals is to search for that unexpected gift – a lesson, relationship, or new skill – in difficult circumstances.  Searching deep and wide for the good within the bad is definitely a practice that I have had to acquire intentionally.  But those trying situations have allowed me to practice seeking the underlying positive message despite the adversity.

Barcelona Cooking: A Review

July 17, 2016 Melanie Glover

On a short visit to Barcelona, I decided that one of the experiences I wanted to have was a taste of local cuisine.  However, because I was making the trip alone due to business reasons, I was also looking for a more interactive way to experience the foods of Barcelona while meeting people.  After searching the internet for companies with food tours and cooking classes in Barcelona, I was disappointed that most of their schedules were already full or non-existent due to August being a traditional month of vacation in Spain.  When I found Barcelona Cooking, I sent an e-mail right away to inquire about their availability.  I immediately received a pleasant reply and confirmation from Tony accommodating my request of a specific date.

When I arrived, Chef Cándido and Emma greeted me with friendliness and enthusiasm.  They told me I was the only student in the class that morning, and I was surprised yet delighted that they did not cancel it or charge me more simply because I was the only student.  They welcomed me into their clean and well-decorated cooking school, and we got started right away.

Because I attended the class during the month of August, the menu was still set for summer.  They offered me wine and bottled water throughout my lesson, and we began to cook!  The menu included pan con tomate (toast with tomato juice, garlic, olive oil, and sea salt, typical from Catalonia); tortilla de patata (Spanish potato omelet, served throughout Spain); paella de mariscos (rice with seafood, typical dish for Spanish cities located on the Mediterranean); and crema catalana (Spain’s version of the French crème brûlée).

Chef Cándido explained interesting facts of each dish as we went along and carefully instructed me on how to prepare them.  I took the class because of my interest in Spanish cuisine because of my family connections to Spain.  I had already had a lot of exposure to Spanish cooking in the past; however, Chef Cándido taught me new information and tips about the Catalan or Spanish roots of the dish and how to prepare it.  His attitude the entire time was helpful and positive.  I felt as though he truly cared about my not only enjoying myself but also learning.  He corrected me when necessary and guided me toward successful completion of all dishes.  Whenever I could improve a technique, he kindly offered a suggestion for the future so that I could practice on my own in the US.  I asked several questions, and Chef Cándido always had the answer.

When we were finished, I was invited to eat for lunch the entire menu that we had prepared.  The dishes were delicious, and my notes reflected new recipes, variations on recipes I had already known, and tips for better cooking experiences in the future.  I was impressed at what I had learned in just a few short hours.  The new knowledge and ideas for future dishes is invaluable information.  But the best part of Barcelona Cooking was the sincerity of the team.  Chef Cándido and Emma are wonderful teachers and hosts, and Tony was just as welcoming in corresponding with me through e-mail to set up my class.  They are invited to my kitchen and home anytime!

If you would like to experience an encouraging, informative, and delicious cooking experience, I highly suggest you participate in one of the classes at Barcelona Cooking.  It offers a unique perspective on Spain and Catalonia that you will not find in a museum or scenic tour.  Barcelona Cooking will help you not only learn how to cook traditional dishes, but the experience will also show you true Spanish hospitality!
